Physical examination
A thorough physical examination is the most important part of your pet's medical care. Dr. Feigenbaum will review any pertinent medical history, information about diet, recent changes in the household, and relationships with other pets and humans. She will carefully assess all of your pet's systems to detect any early evidence of potential problems from both a Western and Chinese medical perspective. Dr. Feigenbaum will use this opportunity to discuss any recommendations about diet, behavior, and preventative medicine, and the address any specific questions or concerns that you may have.
Diagnostics
Depending on physical exam findings and any changes that you may have noted in your pet's health, activity, or behavior, Dr. Feigenbaum may recommend various diagnostic procedures such as bloodwork, uninalysis, or fecal testing. If she feels that additional diagnostics such as x-rays or ultrasound would be helpful, she will make arrangements to have these performed at a clinic with which she works closely.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is very effective at treating a wide variety of common conditions and diseases in small animals. It is frequently used to treat pain associated with arthritis, back problems, and recovery from surgery. Other examples of conditions that may respond to acupuncture are:
- Musculoskeletal disorders- arthritis, disc disease, hip dysplasia, muscle spasms, etc.
- Gastrointestinal disorders- vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, etc.
- Respiratory problems- asthma, chronic cough, chronic sneezing, etc.
- Neurological disorders- epilepsy, deafness, chronic pain, etc.
- Adjunct to chemotherapy- decrease side effects of bone marrow suppression, nausea, etc.
- Urinary disorders- cystitis, incontinence, chronic renal failure, etc.
- Dermatological problems- lick granulomas, allergic dermatitis, etc.
- Behavioral problems- lick granulomas, aggression, anxiety, etc.
Prior to each treatment, Dr. Feigenbaum will perform a thorough exam to ensure an accurate diagnosis from both a Chinese and Western perspective. Most animals tolerate the placement of the needles very well, and seem to feel relaxed as a result of the treatment. Dr. Feigenbaum will recommend a frequency and duration of treatment according to your pet's specific needs.
Chinese Herbs
Chinese medicine is most effective when a combination of acupuncture and herbs is utilized. Dr. Feigenbaum will most likely prescribe a formulation that combines several herbs according the specific Chinese medical diagnosis that she makes for your pet.
Other prescriptions
Dr. Feigenbaum may prescribe other medications, herbs, diets, or nutritional supplements that will address the specific needs of the individual animal.
Compassionate euthanasia
